A Walk in the Greenery and Wildflowers of the Highlands - Example Tour of Fujimi

The Fujimi Highlands, stretching out below the Southern Alps, are well known as a popular resort area.
Countless people visit here throughout the year, with hiking and trekking in the summertime and winter sports during the snowy season.
In addition to the luxurious views, you must also experience the many highland vegetables grown at the foot of the Yatsugatake Mountains. The extreme difference in temperature between day and night, the amount of sunlight, and clear mountain waters, give birth to fresh and vibrant foods. And selecting souvenirs made with those ingredients is another way to enjoy them on top of eating them right away in your meals.
This tour introduces you to the wonder of the Fujimi Highlands, its vast nature, views, and seasonal flowers.

Approximately 10 minutes by car from JR Fujimi Station.
1
Mount Nyukasa walking course
Mount Nyukasa is a treasure trove of nature’s bounty, offering unspoiled nature and seasonal flowers for your enjoyment. You can get quite close to the mountain peak using the gondola, a 15 minute ride in a car that carries eight passengers. When you disembark at the peak, the first thing to greet you is the wildflower garden.
A walk of 10 minutes will then take you to the Nyukasa Marshlands where you will encounter numerous wildflowers such as a large swath covered by lily of the valley.
The walk to the marshlands is more than enough to fill your morning itinerary, but we also recommend coming prepared for a bit of mountain climbing so that you can aim for the peak of Mount Nyukasa as well.
The peak lets you see no less than 22 of the 100 most famous mountains in Japan, including Mt. Fuji. Enjoy the sense of the season you will experience from the 360 degree uninterrupted panoramic view.
2
Lunch
For lunch, we recommend either one of the mountain inns on Mount Nyukasa, the Fujimi Panorama Resort at the foot of the mountain, or the restaurant at Kagome Yasai-seikatsu Farm, your next destination that is also close by.
3
Kagome Yasai-seikatsu Farm (Kagome Vegetable Lifestyle Farm)
The Kagome Yasai-seikatsu Farm was established in Fujimi-cho by Kagome, a major Japanese food manufacturer, to allow visitors to experience and enjoy the delicious taste of vegetables.
Visitors can participate in harvesting of a variety of seasonal vegetables with their own hands, including tomatoes and zucchini in summer, and eggplants (aubergines), turnips, and pumpkins in the fall.
There are a VR installation for learning how vegetable juice is produced and an authentic Italian restaurant that makes generous use of locally harvested seasonal vegetables as well. It is exactly a vegetable theme park. Why not bring the whole family here to have fun enjoying the many activities and the views of the vastness of nature in Yatsugatake.
4
Day Trip Hot Spring
The ideal way to end your first day of the tour is a moment of relaxation at one of the many hot springs surrounded by the abundant nature of Fujimi.
The options are many, such as Yuutoron Suijin-no-Yu (Relaxing Sacred Bath), also known as Behada-no-Yu (bath for beautiful skin), and there are other types of bathing as well such as stone baths, cave baths, and waterfall baths.
One option is Tsuta no Yu (Tsuta Baths, where Tsuta was an ancient post town), a day trip hot spring located within a road station tourist facility. In addition to the hot spring baths, the road station has a corner for direct sale of local vegetables and a souvenir corner as well.
Meanwhile, Shika no Yu (Deer Bath) is a day trip hot spring located within Hotel Happoen. The bath is unique for the way the water turns green only at specific times. There is a golf course nearby as well, so this hot spring is a great place to wash away the sweat after a game.
5
Lodging
Select one of the hotels or pensions in the area for your accommodations, and enjoy a moment of respite at your inn nestled in these highlands.

Day 2

Your second day will take you on a tour through historical ruins that evoke the mystique of ancient times.
Then enjoy the other appealing tourist destinations here after pondering life during the Jomon period.
1
Idojiri Ruins
The Idojiri Ruins are the site of an ancient village located at the very center of the mid Jomon period where the Jomon culture prospered at the foot of the Yatsugatake Mountains. Nestled among the ruins are reconstructed examples of ancient homes, allowing you to slip back in time to the Jomon period.
The Idojiri Archaeological Museum also offers an exhibit of numerous Jomon artifacts, such as the Suien, a deep bowl with a handle-like ornament, that was exhibited in Paris at an exhibit of ancient Japanese art to great acclaim.
The Idojiri Historic Park also features a variety of flowers in bloom, including water lilies, irises (Iris sanguinea), and lotus flowers, from May through September.
So come and experience the mystique of ancient Japan, and the many other attractions, at the Idojiri Ruins.
2
Fujimi Kogen Resort Hananosato
Blossoming flowers extend as far as the eye can see at the Fujimi Kogen Resort Hananosato, with three areas arranged according to season and altitude, each offering a symphony of flowering beauty in unity with the surrounding scenery. When the whitened mountain slopes begin to transform and herald the coming of spring, the graceful and elegant flowers as they gently sway in the highland breeze are magical to behold.
In addition to walking throughout the resort, you can also make use of a Tenku Cart, a self driving vehicle, to get you around as well. Any visitor can easily make the 25 minute climb, over a difference in elevation of 200 meters, up to the cloud tops at an elevation of 1,420 meters, for a trip within a trip offering emotionally powerful views of the surroundings.
3
Lunch
There are countless options for gourmet dining in Fujimi-cho, where you can experience the delicious highland flavors.
You can freely seek out the one that meets your fancy, whether the highly recommended and famous soba shop, a venerable western style restaurant, or a shop serving desserts to enjoy after your lunch.
4
Yatsugatake Alpaca Farm
This alpaca farm is popular with families. The alpacas are quite friendly because they have been interacting with visitors since they were babies.
One popular attraction is walking with the alpacas, where you can enjoy a leisurely stroll with the animals with your friends or family unaccompanied by any staff.
In addition to the alpacas, there is also a petting zoo with a variety of animals to interact with, such as rabbits and guinea pigs. The Alpaca House gift shop also offers a variety of alpaca related goods, such as cute dolls and accessories.
