The town where the former road intersect

Shimosuwa-machi prospers as a post town where the former Nakasendo and the former Koshu Kaido roads intersect, and where you can see the nostalgic alleys of Japan and a charming townscape. It is also known as the only post town in Nakasendo with hot springs, and there are still many hot spring inns.

There is a long-established Japanese sweets shop worthy of visiting in this area.
Founded in 1873, Shintsuru-Honten is located next to Suwa Taisha’s Shimosha Akimiya (autumn shrine).
Their beautiful Japanese sweets, including their salted yokan that they have been making since their founding, are loved by many.

Shintsuru Shio Yokan is made using red beans from Tokachi, Hokkaido that have been carefully inspected to ensure no poor quality or dull ones are included in the batch, and natural agar, a specialty of Chino City. The shop has continued to adhere to the same method of preparation since its founding, which involves burning firewood and kneading the yokan by hand.

In addition, their seasonal Japanese sweets are also popular. Don’t forget to take a picture before eating them.
Enjoy your visit to the town of Shimosuwa with Japanese sweets from the Shintsuru-Honten.
